Earl Campbell Tyler Rhodes Award
AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas freshman quarterback Arch Manning has been named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rhodes Award Player of the Week, while junior wide receiver Isaiah Bond was named honorable mention following UT’s 56-7 win over UTSA on Sept. 14.
Manning was named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rhodes Award Player of the Week, was named to the Davey O’Brien Great Eight list and was named SEC co-Newcomer of the Year on Monday.
Manning, who replaced an injured Quinn Ewers in the second quarter of the September 14 game against UTSA, completed 9 of 12 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns. The New Orleans native had a 67-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, giving him five touchdowns on the night. After entering the game, Manning threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to WR DeAndre Moore Jr. to extend UT’s lead to 21–0. Manning threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to WR Isaiah Bond to start the third quarter, followed by a 75-yard pass to WR Ryan Wingo with 10:57 left in the third quarter. To close out the day, Manning threw a 12-yard pass to WR Jontay Cook II in the end zone to extend UT’s lead to 49–7 with 13:19 left in the fourth quarter.
With his 67-yard touchdown run, Manning became just the fifth SEC freshman quarterback in the past 15 years to have a touchdown run of 65 or more yards, joining South Carolina’s LaNoris Sellers (who did it Saturday), Florida State’s Anthony Richardson (2021), Auburn’s Malik Willis (2017) and Texas A&M’s Johnny Manuel (2012). Manning’s 75-yard touchdown pass to Wingo (the seventh-longest pass by a UT freshman) and 67-yard touchdown run against UTSA (the longest ever by a UT freshman) marked the first time in UT history that a player had both a pass and a rush in the same game. Colt McCoy (2009) and Vince Young (2003 and 2005) are the only players in program history to have both a pass and a rush in the same season for 65 or more yards. Manning is the only FBS or NFL quarterback in the last 25 years to record a touchdown pass of 75+ yards, a rushing touchdown of 65 yards and a touchdown pass of 50+ yards in the same game (via OptaStats). Manning’s 67-yard rushing touchdown was the longest by a University of Texas quarterback since Vince Young’s 80-yard scoring run in the third quarter of a game against Oklahoma State on October 29, 2005. His rushing touchdown was the longest by a University of Texas quarterback since Jaedon Blue reached the end zone from 69 yards out in the second quarter of Texas’ 57-7 win over Texas Tech on November 24, 2023. Manning’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Cook II early in the fourth quarter marked the first time a Texas quarterback has caught five or more touchdowns in a game since Casey Thompson caught six against Texas Tech on Sept. 25, 2021. Manning’s five touchdowns on the night (four passing, one rushing) are the most by a Texas freshman quarterback. Colt McCoy caught six passes on Oct. 14, 2006 against Baylor.
Bonds recorded his first career 100-yard receiving and multiple touchdown receptions against the Roadrunners. The Buford, Georgia native caught five passes for a career-high 103 yards and two scores, including a season-long 51-yard reception. Bonds had a 7-yard touchdown reception from QB Quinn Ewers on the opening drive of the game, and then scored his second touchdown of the day on a 51-yard touchdown pass from QB Arch Manning with under two minutes left in the third quarter. Bonds joined freshman wide receiver Ryan Wingo as the first Longhorns to record 100 yards receiving during the 2024 season. Bonds and Wingo also became the first receiving duo to each gain more than 100 yards in a game since Adonai Mitchell (109) and Ja’Tavion Sanders (105) both topped 100 yards against Oklahoma State in the 2023 Big 12 Championship.
This week, the Longhorns return to the friendly surroundings of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium to take on ULM on Saturday, September 21 at 7pm CST on ESPN+/SEC Network+, with Lowell Galindo (play-by-play), Fozzie Whitaker (commentary) and Alex Chappell (sideline) providing play-by-play coverage.
