what to do
Visit the Buddy Holly Center
The Buddy Holly Center in the Depot Entertainment District is dedicated to the short but influential career of Lubbock’s most famous musician. Featuring exhibits and documentary films, the museum is also home to the teenage drummer JI Allison of the band The Crickets, where he and bandmate Buddy Holly recorded some of their hits. The house I wrote about has been relocated.

Check out Prairie Dog Town
Officially part of Mackenzie Park, this 7-acre preserve is home to hundreds of prairie dogs that pop out of their burrows, captivating children and adults alike. Established as a preserve in 1935, the controversial prairie dog (the scourge of ranchers and farmers) is Lubbock’s unofficial mascot.
