Mental health care in Texas has recently been placed under a microscope. Recent data collected showed that Lone Star status is missing in a way to get the help they want. But new large sums have been set up to help some of the nation find care.
Who is providing grants to Texas?
As KXXV revealed, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is the grant provider. In total, the amount offered is $239 million. Money helps Texans focus on the countryside of the state and reduce the distance they need.
Gov. Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement:
“This $239 million investment will expand inpatient mental health services and allow rural communities to bring patients closer to their homes. I commend the Texas Legislature and HHSC for their continued efforts to improve access to mental health care across the state.”
“HHSC is dedicated to working with Congress to increase access to quality behavioral health resources,” said Scott Schalchlin, deputy director of the HHSC Health and Specialty Care System.
What exactly will the funds be used for?
KXXV revealed that this is a way to split money:
– The $40 million new facility in Victoria County features up to 60 beds.
– $50 million to expand the Montgomery County Mental Health Treatment Facility in Conroe with up to 100 beds.
– $64 million for renovations and expansion. We added 72 beds to Baptist Hospital in Southeast Texas in Beaumont.
– $85 million for up to 100 beds at DHR Health in Edinburg.
He also said that more than half of the aforementioned beds will support for forensic patients. KXXV reports that these patients are being considered by the Texas criminal justice system for “recovery of competency.”
Time will tell if more funds from Texas will be used to support state mental care.
