Students at many campuses in the Fort Worth Independent School District will be eligible for free dinners this year, meaning some kids will be able to eat a full day of meals at school.
The dinners will be provided at any school that offers an after-school program. Students do not need to be enrolled in an after-school activity to receive the meals, they just need to be on campus.
Meals are served 15 minutes after the end of class and include grains, meat or meat substitutes, fruits, vegetables and dairy products.
The district already provides free breakfast and lunch to students and plans to continue doing so through the 2024-2025 school year. It has partnered with food service company Sodexo to provide dinner to 57 elementary schools, 18 middle schools and 14 high schools.
“We look forward to a great year of making a positive impact in the lives of our students every day,” Pamela Watson, executive director of child nutrition services for the district, said in a statement. “Our partnership with Sodexo embodies that spirit of collaboration with the goal of creating thriving learning environments.”
According to Feeding Texas, a statewide food bank network, one in five Texas children experience hunger, putting 20 percent of children in the state at increased risk for hospitalization, health conditions like anemia and asthma, and problems with classroom learning and social skills.
The Fort Worth Independent School District’s new school year begins Aug. 13. The district had more than 70,000 students last year, according to data from the Texas Education Agency.
