Four people were injured when an Abilene Christian University bus was involved in an accident following the school’s 52-51 overtime loss to Texas Tech on Saturday night.
One player, two coaches and the bus driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, according to a statement from the FCS school. The driver who struck the bus was arrested for DUI and for ignoring a traffic signal, according to KTXS.
“A traffic accident occurred on a bus transporting members of the ACU football team from Lubbock, where ACU played Texas Tech, on Saturday night,” a statement from the school said. “The bus carrying team members and coaches was en route to Abilene when the accident occurred at approximately 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Marcia Sharp Freeway Frontage Road and University Avenue.”
“As a result of the accident, four individuals suffered minor injuries – one student-athlete, two coaches and the bus driver. All were transported to University Medical Center in Lubbock.”
“We are grateful to Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt, team physician Dr. Michael Pay and all emergency medical personnel for their assistance and care.”
ACU was one play away from pulling off the upset Saturday night. After Texas Tech scored a TD on its first possession and a successful PAT, the Wildcats scored a game-tying field goal with five seconds left and a TD in the first overtime. After Isaiah Johnson scored on a 1-yard TD run, ACU went for the two-point conversion for the win, but Maverick McIver was sacked on the play.
McIver, a former Texas Tech player, completed 36 of 51 passes for 506 yards and three touchdowns. ACU trailed 32-14 with 2:55 left in the second quarter but chipped away at Texas Tech’s lead in the second half to tie the game at 42-42 with 4:55 left.
