In a heartfelt ceremony filled with the spirit of community, the City of McAllen recognized Alonzo Cantu as the inaugural recipient of the McAllen SHINES Community Champion Award, which enhances the beauty of our city, fosters civic pride, and leads by example. I praised his efforts. This recognition is part of the McAllen SHINES initiative. This citywide movement promotes cleanliness, respect, and collaboration among residents, businesses, and city officials, making McAllen a shining example of community excellence.
McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos praised Alonzo Cantu’s lasting impact on the city’s landscape, saying, “Alonzo’s work is one of McAllen SHINES.” His leadership and dedication to strengthening McAllen’s business space is an inspiration to all of us. He plays an important role in making McAllen a better place. “We deeply appreciate his contributions,” Villalobos said of Cantu, an 11-story landmark with pristine landscaping and design that reflects a commitment to excellence. I mentioned Norana Tower.
Mayor Villalobos acknowledged that McAllen SHINES itself draws inspiration from Tampico’s transformation. “If Tampico can shine, so can McAllen. But this is more than just replicating an idea. It’s about changing our culture, from our commercial districts to our schools and neighborhoods. Alonzo Cantu were already leading this charge even before this effort began,” he said.
City Manager Isaac “Ike” Tawil agreed, saying, “Alonzo’s vision has created opportunities and improved the quality of life for McAllen residents.” His dedication to beautification and community building is unparalleled, and we are honored to recognize him as an integral part of McAllen Shine. ”
Launched by McAllen Public Works, McAllen Shine is more than just a beautification campaign, it’s a cultural movement that fosters civic pride and responsibility. This initiative includes programs such as:
Refresh 50/50: Matching funds for businesses to renovate storefronts and improve curb appeal. Imagine Tomorrow: A partnership between code enforcement and local organizations to revitalize older neighborhoods and encourage housing improvements. Project Clean Neighborhoods: A no-cost program that provides roll-offs Keep McAllen Beautiful: Transforming functional urban features, such as irrigation standpipes, into works of public art painted by local artists.
These programs aim to improve the appearance of McAllen while fostering a sense of shared responsibility. Highlighting the success of these efforts, Tawil said, “You can see the results everywhere, from clean streets and green parks to beautifully painted murals. It changed my perspective.”
This award recognizes individuals whose work aligns with the mission of the SHINES Initiative. Cantu’s contribution goes beyond beautification. As a leader in banking, health care, housing and entertainment, he has consistently invested in the growth and well-being of McAllen. Cantu businesses such as Lone Star National Bank, DHR Health, and Cantu Construction have provided essential services while promoting opportunities for city residents.
Public Works Director Elvira Alonzo emphasized Cantu’s holistic approach to community improvement. “Alonzo demonstrated McAllen’s SHINES spirit by designing spaces that were warm, open, and inviting. His projects redefined how people interact with public space and have a lasting impact on McAllen.” It created a positive impact.”
Cantu’s acceptance speech was characteristically humble. “I’m not a good public speaker,” he began. “However, I would like to thank the City of McAllen, the Mayor, and the Commissioners. Beyond my time at the University of Houston, McAllen has always been my home and it is an honor to be recognized in this way. One, but we have to keep moving forward to stay there.”
Mr. Elvira credited the success of this initiative to the dedication of city staff and residents. “From picking up trash to organizing events like this, McAllen’s teamwork is what makes our city shine,” said Public Works Director Elvira Alonzo. “It’s great to work with such dedicated people. It’s an honor.”
Marketing Coordinator Sara Cepeda further emphasized Cantu’s leadership and community involvement. “Through his efforts, Alonzo has shown us the true impact one person can have. He is not doing it alone, and we are also committed to supporting his vision. We recognize the team from Lone Star National Bank, DHR Health and other venture companies.”
The ceremony culminated with a countdown to the lighting of the holiday tree, symbolizing both the holiday season and McAllen’s bright future. As the crowd took part in the countdown, the illuminated tree stood as a testament to community pride and the power of collaboration.
Looking forward, the city remains committed to honoring individuals like Alonzo Cantu who embody the spirit of McAllen SHINES. “This award is just the beginning,” Cepeda said. “We look forward to celebrating our future champions who inspire us to be proud of who we are and where we live.”
Alonzo Cantu’s recognition as the inaugural McAllen SHINES Community Champion marks a milestone in the city’s journey toward cultural transformation. His work inspires what is possible when vision, dedication, and civic pride come together. McAllen Shine is not just about beautification, it’s about building a community where everyone feels invested, respected and motivated to make a difference.
