Texas A&M University – Central Texas lowers university flag in memory of former military general
KILLEEN, Texas — A&M-Central Texas honored one of its founders Wednesday, albeit with a heavy heart.
Texas A&M-Central Texas State acknowledges the passing of Lt. Gen. Horace “Pete” Taylor (ret.) by lowering the university flag outside Founders Hall, Gen. Robert M. Shoemaker, according to a statement from the university. It’s in
University President Richard M. Rose declared that the flag would remain lowered until after Taylor’s memorial service, funeral, and burial.
“General Taylor was a very important person to all of us at A&M-Central Texas. We honor his life, his tremendous contributions to the U.S. military, the Central Texas educational community, and the honor he gave to this nation. We’re joining our community to commemorate the great love we had for,”’ Rose said.
Taylor worked closely with General Robert M. Shoemaker and hundreds of community leaders to establish an institution of higher education based in Killeen, Texas.
Taylor served two terms as the first Foundation President and oversaw the school’s growth. His work allowed A&M Central Texas to offer scholarships and ultimately was the reason for increased student enrollment.
Taylor’s leadership of A&M Central Texas students and employees earned him a deep love and respect from the community.
“It was not unusual to find General Taylor sitting at a cafe table in Founders Hall or in the staff room, listening attentively to students or talking to staff members who were pursuing their degrees,” Rose said. .
“He was deeply involved in our community and took the time to be present for the many who had the pleasure of knowing him as a mentor and friend. We will miss him. My deepest condolences to everyone,” Rose said.
