Miami narrowly edged out Texas for No. 5 in the Associated Press College Football Poll on Sunday, its highest ranking since 2017, with Notre Dame, BYU and Texas A&M also in the top 10.
Oregon, Georgia, Penn State and Ohio State remain the top four teams, while Washington State and Colorado State break into the top 25 for the first time this season.

Miami, led by Heisman Trophy candidate Cam Ward, improved to 8-0 with a win over Florida State on Saturday. The Hurricanes have finished in the top 10 in the poll eight times in a row, but haven’t been this high since November 2017, when they spent two weeks in second place.
Texas, which had dropped from first to fifth after losing to Georgia at home, dropped further to sixth after a three-point win against Vanderbilt.
Notre Dame, which dropped out of the top 10 with a loss to Northern Illinois in Week 2, moved up four spots to No. 8 with a 51-14 win over Navy.
No. 9 BYU went on the road, defeating UCF 8-0 and earning its highest ranking since 2020, when the Cougars opened with nine straight wins.
Texans A&M’s 38-23 win over LSU was its second win of the season against a top-10 opponent, moving first-year coach Mike Elko’s Aggies up four spots to No. 10. This is their highest ranking since they placed 6th. In September 2022.
No. 1 Oregon State defeated Illinois 38-9, receiving 61 of 62 first-place votes, two more than last week. The vacant second place, Georgia, received one more vote.
Penn State beat Wisconsin despite losing quarterback Drew Allard to injury just before halftime, staying in third place and heading into this weekend’s home game against Ohio State. However, although Ohio State struggled at home against Near State, they won 21-17 and maintained their fourth place. Nebraska is a 4-touchdown underdog.

Notre Dame and Texas A&M had the biggest increases. LSU’s drop from No. 8 to No. 16 was the largest drop.
BYU has moved up the rankings six times in a row since entering No. 22 on Sept. 22. Pittsburgh has moved up four straight times since its season debut at No. 22 on Oct. 6.
This is the first time this season that the poll has only one player representing the Southeastern Conference in the top five, as Texas has fallen to sixth place. This is the fourth week in a row that the Big Ten has had three of the top four teams.
Miami is the first Atlantic Coast Conference team to finish in the top five since Florida State placed fourth in the first week of last December.
Washington State (7-1) beat San Diego State for its third straight win, moving into 22nd place and going from the rest of the Pac-12 to the No. 1 team this season (other current members are (Oregon State University only).
Colorado (6-2) won five of six after defeating Cincinnati to move into 23rd place and the third consecutive appearance in the polls for the Deion Sanders-led Buffaloes since appearing in the polls early last season. This was the first ranking.
Vanderbilt’s first ranking since the 2013 season lasted just one week. At No. 25, the Commodores received the most votes of any team outside the top 25.
Navy lost by 37 points to Notre Dame, committing six turnovers and losing for the second straight week. Rivals (7 wins, 0 losses) moved up two spots to 21st place.

ACC — 4 (No. 5, 11, 18, 20).
Big 12 — 4 (No. 9, 11, 17, 23).

Pac-12 — 1 (No. 22).
— No. 4 Ohio State vs. No. 3 Penn State. This will be the fourth matchup between the top five teams this season. The Buckeyes won seven straight games in the series. Both teams have had health issues, none as big as Penn State’s Aller’s knee injury.
— No. 18 Pittsburgh vs. No. 20 SMU. Of the four teams undefeated in ACC play, these two are the biggest surprises. Pitt was picked 13th in the conference and 7th in SMU in a preseason media poll.
