SAN ANTONIO – A new agency has won a bid to take over foster parents, adoption and community care services in Bexar County.
Until now, the Texas Department of Family Protection has handled Bexar County.
However, last week, SJRC won a bid to take over it. Since 2021, SJRC has been serving foster, adoption and family services in 27 rural counties around Bexar County, serving 2,094 children.
In Bexar County alone, SJRC is tasked with serving 2,500 children.
While the state still handles child welfare investigations and removals, SJRC currently oversees case management, foster parents, adoption, family unification, and more.
SJRC Texas CEO Tara Roussett said as SJRC continues to grow, more staff will join the team.
“It’s a huge responsibility and something we haven’t underestimated,” Lusett said.
Looset said that although each section of the county may have different needs, there are infrastructure and plans to “build from what we already started.”
“We want to build community support in every part of our region, and everything in Bexar County is working together,” Lusett said.
SJRC Impact
Parents Caitlyn and Joshua English said they rely heavily on SJRC Texas.
The couple had a hard time with having their own children so they decided to take a different route.
They raised a little boy to adopt. They did something very unusual and called and asked if other siblings could also be hired.
“We decided it was best to keep them together and see them growing. We couldn’t imagine them not being together,” Caitlyn English said.
“There was no other decision,” Joshua English said.
“They are very resilient, and the ability to overcome problems they shouldn’t have put before them,” he said.
My parents said it was the staff at SJRC who made the real difference.
“It attracts people who have hearts, skills and are willing to devote most of their lives to helping these kids,” Joshua English said. “It’s kind of emotional work, and not too many people have been cut out.”
The couple believes that some things are uniquely suited to SJRC for the task.
“One of the things I’ve learned is how many community partners they have and how involved they are in the community. I think the resources for these families are really helpful,” Joshua English said.
Parents specifically utilize SJRC’s partnership with selected organizations.
“It’s clear that children need a lot of help, but parents themselves often need some help,” Joshua English said. “It provides strategies and tools to help you work through action.”
When British families appear on the anniversary of their one-year adoption, families in Bexar County hope to soon find the love and support they have found.
