“Their integrity with their services, community service was consistent with what I was already doing,” Crystal Gayden said.
Dallas, Texas – For Rosemary Bolden, the colours she wore in college as a member of the Alpha Kappa Alfa Sorority still evoke a strong sense of pride.
“The pink and green walking across that campus are members of the Alpha Kappa Alfa Sorority.”
The country’s first black sorority, aka the country’s first black sorority, has long been known for its focus on community service, as evidenced by a recent event in Dallas. The sorority has been doing that for years. It’s now standard for a different sister. Serving others gives many members a sense of belonging and purpose.
“The level of confidence I gained went through the roof,” Bolden said. “I was a shy girl who couldn’t find her path from one side of the campus to the next.”
Crystal Gayden’s passion for services also increased when he joined Delta Sigmatheta after graduating from university.
“Their integrity with their services, community service was consistent with what I was already doing,” explained Crystal Gayden.
Gayden is a local attorney in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with a very busy schedule. Still, she found time to serve a sorority. Taking home from providing community service for her is valuable. She said she gives pride in knowing that she is part of an organization that makes a difference in the lives of others.
Both Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta boast hundreds of thousands of members worldwide, united by a common commitment to service.
“We’re all walking hand in hand to make a huge difference to this world,” Bolden said.
Together, these organizations are part of The Divine Nine, a collection of four black sororities and five fraternities. Many of these groups were founded by former slave children and grandchildren, who continue to have a lasting impact.
Among the most famous members of Divine Nine is Vice President Kamala Harris, a sister to the Alpha Kappa Alfa Sorority who attracted attention to the Black Greek organization in his presidential run.
“It itself did great things for God’s nine,” Gayden said.
God’s Nine gave birth to important leaders, including Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Martin Luther King Jr. and Rep. John Lewis.
Rashad Rayner, a member of the Kappa Alpha Sai fraternity, said being part of his fraternity provided him with opportunities that he may not be.
“Specifically, with all of the different members we have in the world, whenever I have the opportunity to go out and do work, it’s not too far from the other brother of Kappa Alpha psi. There’s never a corner that doesn’t exist.” Rashad Rayner said, “When I meet these brothers, we bond, we work together and add together based on the humanity we have. I’ll do something like that.”
For Van Newborn, a member of Omega Psi Phi, the connections made through his fraternity are invaluable. He is always looking for other opportunities to serve alongside his fraternity and other members of the Nine of God.
“It’s like having relatives all over the world, having hundreds of thousands of relatives,” the newborn said.
Stepping, a traditional form of dance, is an integral part of the sacred nine culture and is often seen in events that bring together members both in competition and friendship.
“They look at the energy and that’s great, but you can just use it to bring them closer and talk about Omega,” the newborn said.
The nine organizations of God are female student life Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (aka), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (DST), Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. “We still hurt from then,” Newbern said.
At its core, God’s nine is more than just a social bond. It’s about making a difference in the community.
“The foundation of what we are is service,” Gayden said.
“The fundamental purpose of Kappa Alpha PSI is the achievement of all areas of human effort,” Rayner said. With the youths in our community. ”
Kappa Alpha Psi has two programs for students called Guide Right and Kappa League, which involves mentoring young men in the community. Other fraternities and sororities have similar programs.
In Dallas-Fort Worth, members of God’s Nine have been engaging in bonds, working together and making lasting changes to improve their community.
