The race for Texas chairman continues to divide the Republican Party. This position is the third most powerful position in the Capitol. The Speaker sets legislative priorities, can also repeal bills, and assigns members to committees, among other things.
Republicans are currently divided between Rep. David Cook of Mansfield, who has the support of the House Republican caucus, and Rep. Dustin Burroughs of Lubbock, who was on outgoing House Speaker Dade Phelan’s team. There is. Burroughs claims he has the 76 votes needed to win from some Republicans and Democrats.
The year may have only just begun, but Texas is already talking about the 2026 election. Attorney General Ken Paxton said he is considering challenging Sen. John Cornyn, who is up for re-election next year.
