Corpus Christi – Graduate student Angelo Cabral was strong with a career-high 8.2 innings to lead the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team. The South Texas showdown was announced by Rally Credit Union.
UTRGV and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will play two games of this double header at around 5:05pm on ESPN+.
Cabral (3-0) hit a five with eight hits scattered without anyone walking. He threw 67 of his 96 pitches (69.79%) for strike.
Junior Stephen Oliva recorded his third save final.
The game was tied up in 2, the ninth time. Gage Burdick (1-2) began the inning by pushing out junior Rene Galván. He then pitched a wild pitch, allowing Galvan to advance to third place. Tristan Crane scored a 1-1 count against Senior Hank Warren and got a groundout to lift Galvan to third place. Freshman Cameron Carter gave Vaqueros (18-7, 11-2 SLC) the lead, following with a sacrifice fly.
Islander (9-19, 1-9 SLC) starter Zac Garcia hit one hit Vaqueros in the first 4.2 innings. But with the fifth two outs, sophomore Vela alumnus Rudy Gonzalez chose. Graduate student Vela Alum Isaac Lopez continued his single to center. The error moved the runners to second and third, setting up a two-run single by sophomore Easton Moomau, bringing Vaqueros up to 2-0.
Gonzalez finished a career-high 2-4.
Cabral was cruising sixth and had only faced at least two times from the first five innings. However, in the sixth time, Austin Russell singled, doubled the Trae Cruz. For one, Isaac Webb tied the game with a two-run triple hit.
