Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns have enjoyed their long-awaited return to the spotlight over the past two years, making it 25-5 in consecutive college football playoff semi-finals.
Sarkisian deserves many credits for leading the Longhorn for over a decade without celebrating. At the very least, that’s how logical people should see the situation, but it doesn’t seem to be how former NFL MVP Cam Newton views it.
In an interview with “Up and Adams” last month, Sarkisian described how he believes Longhorns culture has helped him win the game over the past few years. While responding to that interview, Newton made a strange rant about not their culture but the Longhorns booster money being the reason for their success.
In honor, Cam didn’t understand the culture that Sarkisian took over after Herman left the program in confusion. It’s true that Nir benefited the University of Texas, but the culture founded by the coaching staff helped shape those young men for the better…pic.twitter.com/b7bices7jq

“Look, coach, Sarkisian, that stuff is all cool. It takes time to build a culture, but having a booster stuck to the University of Texas can also help,” Newton said. “Hello? They have the number one recruiting class in the country and probably the number one spending in the country.
“A good coach knows that you need great players. Today, these players are a huge expense. Looking back at how college sports were impacted by Nir, we find the commonality that winning teams spend a lot of money.
On one level, Newton’s point may make sense. After all, Ohio, a team that just beat Texas on its way to the national championship, has garnered around $20 million worth of rosters in the NIL. Texas is building a roster that costs the same amount of money in 2025.
But the only reason the players come to Austin is that they are simply ridiculous. The Longhorns have always had talent, even during the unforgettable decade of the 2010s, but that talent began to be translated once again into victory after Sarkisian took over. That’s not a coincidence.
If that wasn’t bad enough, the next part of Newton’s rant is where he really gets away from the deep edge.
“Director Sarkisian is respectful and admirable for what he can do in Texas. I’m not only flying your fans, but your wife too. Matthew McConaughey was one of my childhood heroes and still someone I admire. Take that into consideration.”
Regardless of your opinion on this argument, such a pocketless comment about Sarkisian’s wife appears to be incorrect. Again, it’s not so unusual for hot take artists that Newton is trying to emulate and do questionable work.
