From vibrant cultural traditions to lasting contributions that shape the American soul, Hispanic Heritage Month is more than just a celebration — it’s a testament to the rich diversity and incredible influence of the Hispanic community. Every year from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate the stories, history and achievements of individuals with roots in the Caribbean, Central and South America, Spain and Mexico.
This month encourages us to recognize the impact Hispanic Americans have had on shaping our national identity and on our music, art, food, political struggles, and culture. Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week-long celebration in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. It was then expanded to its current form in 1988. This monumental decision honored social justice warriors Cesar Chavez, Delores Huerta, and Latina from TexasEmma is a labor rights activist and educator. Tenayuca led what was considered the first Tejano and Mexican labor victory in U.S. history.

As Mexico’s Independence Day, Diez y Seis de Septiembre (September 16), is increasingly celebrated across the Rio Bravo (Rio Grande), it is important that all Texans find joy in this moving and diverse tradition. An annual initiative to encourage the Library of Congress to preserve more Latino films and artists. To celebrate their achievements, join us all month long for some fun events:
