NORTH TEXAS – Hackers briefly breached the City of Richardson’s server early Wednesday morning and attempted to encrypt data files on the network.
The city cut off access to its internal servers as a precaution, and officials believe the hackers likely did not access any sensitive data.
The unauthorized access occurred at 6:22 a.m.
“The threat of such an incident is a reality facing every city, and we have been diligently preparing for it,” Mayor Don Magner said in a news release. “At this time, our security measures appear to have been successful in minimizing the impact, and we hope that this will continue to be the case.”
“We are working hard to restore our systems as quickly as possible and will identify the resources necessary to assist affected individuals as needed.”
The city said essential services such as emergency response and online payments will remain available.
The FBI is investigating, while the Department of Homeland Security has been notified about the breach, and city officials said other agencies have been alerted.
