In the first round of the College Football Playoff (CFP), the 12th place Clemson Tigers will face the 5th place Texas Longhorns. The game will take place on Saturday, December 21st at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin and is scheduled to start at 4pm ET/1pm PT.
The Tigers are 10-3 overall and 7-1 in conference play, but defeated SMU in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship to earn a spot in the CFP. Texas went 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference, but lost to Georgia in the SEC Championship and was deprived of a first-round bye.
The CFP has moved to a 12-team playoff format, with the highest ranking winners from the top four conferences earning the top four seeds. If a team is not ranked higher than No. 12, the highest-ranked winner of the fifth conference will receive the No. 12 seed. The remainder of the playoff field will be filled by bracketed rankings published by the CFP Committee. The top four seeds will receive a one-round bye.
The winner of Clemson vs. Texas will play the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Peach Bowl.
