More shoppers, earlier sunsets, distractions and thieves can make parking lots a dangerous place during the holiday season. That’s why AAA Texas is reminding drivers about the dangers of parking lots this time of year and urging shoppers to take simple steps to prevent collisions and auto theft.
“This holiday season, please stay focused, be alert, and be aware of all hazards in crowded parking lots,” said Doug Shoop, corporate communications manager for AAA Texas. “During the festive period of the year, a momentary distraction or bad decision by a shopper in a hurry can lead to an unfortunate situation.”
Collisions in parking lots often result in expensive insurance claims for vehicle damage, or worse, injuries if you hit a pedestrian. Most crashes are caused by distractions, including talking to passengers, listening to cell phones, the radio, or simply using tunnel vision to find a place to park.
According to AAA Texas claims data, auto repair costs have increased by 50% over the past five years. Although many people consider parking lot collisions to be minor, modern vehicle bumpers are equipped with complex cameras and sensors that can be damaged in low-speed collisions and can cause damage to the vehicle. You may need to readjust to get back on the road safely. Recalibration alone can cost hundreds of dollars.
To avoid accidents in parking lots, AAA Texas warns drivers:
– Be careful of people, small children and moving vehicles
– Drive slowly and obey all traffic signs
– Do not cross parking lanes or rows of parking spaces
– Turn on your headlights during the day, especially when driving in dark parking lots.
– Always exchange insurance information at the scene of a collision
To help prevent crimes of opportunity this season, AAA Texas is reminding drivers to:
– Always lock your car doors and close your windows
– Do not leave the vehicle running unless the driver is present.
– Do not leave your belongings or purchases visible from outside your vehicle.
– Park in well-lit areas with high population.
– Never hide a spare ignition key in your vehicle.
Remember, thieves may be watching for shoppers trying to hide valuables inside their cars and trucks. Hiding presents and other valuables is a good strategy, but be discreet and be aware of who’s looking.
