WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar (TX-28) helped pass the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act of 2023. This bill he supported as a co-sponsor and co-signer of the expulsion petition to force a floor vote. The bill removes provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other essential public servants. This bill is currently before the Senate.
“It’s time to help teachers, law enforcement, postal workers, and other public servants,” Dr. Cuellar said. “I am pleased to support our elected officials by passing legislation that will ensure they receive the benefits they have rightfully earned. That is why, for years, I have supported workers with Social Security benefits. I want to thank Representative Graves and Representative Spanberger for their leadership in advancing this bill.”
The Social Security Fairness Act eliminates provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive other benefits, such as pensions, from state or local governments.
Specifically, the bill would eliminate government pension offsets, which in various cases would reduce Social Security benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers who also receive a government pension. It turns out.
The bill also eliminates, in some cases, a windfall deduction provision that reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who also receive pension or disability benefits from an employer that does not withhold Social Security taxes.
