Delia Parker Mims said the new energy is palpable and will help lower-ranked candidates in Texas.
DENTON COUNTY, Texas — The Denton County Democratic Party chairman called Kamala Harris’ selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate a “great” choice.
“I call them the ‘2 Live Crew,’ and I mean that in a good way. They’re very active,” Delia Parker Mims told Inside Texas Politics.
Parker Mims, who took over as commissioner in 2021, said Walz isn’t just a safe choice.
It’s the right strategy, she says.
“He’s a safe choice, but he’s also a good choice to bring what’s called the ‘bubba’ vote, the rural vote, the vote that will attract a different set of voters than the demographic she’s attracting,” Parker Mims said.
Parker Mims said she has seen and felt a shift in energy since Harris was named the Democratic presidential nominee after Joe Biden left office.
“It was like the dead had come back to life,” she said.
And she thinks having Harris-Waltz at the top of the list of candidates will be an advantage for Democratic candidates in Texas.
Parker Mims said that when he was planning his get-out-the-vote strategy in Denton County, he actually considered not including President Biden in any of his materials, instead focusing on U.S. Senate candidate Collin Allred and other issues, such as the anti-school voucher push.
“But with this new burst of energy, I can’t think of anything better than seeing a smiling face of Vice President Kamala on a door hanger with all of our candidates on the back saying, this is how we save our democracy, these are the people you’re voting for,” Parker Mims said.
