Matt Angle says President Biden needs to clarify whether he will withdraw his nomination or move to hand the nomination over to Vice President Kamala Harris.
DALLAS — The Democratic Party has been in turmoil for weeks, with a group of party members calling on President Biden to step down as the party’s presidential nominee — a call he has resisted.
The pressure is growing daily, with Democratic leaders, lawmakers and donors publicly saying President Biden cannot win reelection and should not be on the list.
Matt Angle, president of the Lone Star Project, said it’s the president’s choice and he has the right to make that decision.
“Democrats are strong. We will stand our ground. We will make our case. But Joe Biden has earned the right to make his own decision,” Angle told Inside Texas Politics.
The Democratic National Convention runs from Aug. 19-22, and the deadline to vote in some states for the November election is looming, leaving some Democrats feeling anxious. Angle believes the party has plenty of time to win if it stays focused on the task of defeating former President Trump.
“We have over 100 days until the election. That’s a long time. It’s important that we get this resolved quickly and get the focus back on what matters most, which is Donald Trump,” Angle said.
Angel said many people are worried about the state of the presidential election, but he’s more concerned about the fact that it’s being debated in public.
“Anyone who follows politics knows that now is the time to talk about our common interests, our common goals, to bring our coalition together, to talk about why the Democratic choice is better than the Republican choice. That’s the concern,” Angle asserted.
Democratic consultants believe that if Democrats can come together quickly, keep campaigning and regain momentum around the Democratic National Convention, they can make it in time for the November election.
Angle told Inside Texas Politics what he’s keeping an eye on in the coming week.
“We need to be clear about what signals are coming from the White House and from those around the president, whether he’s going to take over or there’s a movement to hand over to Kamala Harris. That’s the most important thing, because again, we need to stop thinking only about ourselves, stop thinking only about our differences, and focus on what’s most important, and that’s stopping the Republican Party from destroying our democracy.”
