NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – Many East Texans will soon be on the hunting bench. Authorities are urging people who go out to be aware of local fire regulations.
As of Friday, 23 counties in East Texas were under burn bans.
“During the season, there’s an increased influx of people because more people are getting out and into the woods,” Texas A&M Forest Service spokeswoman Laura Stevens said.
The agency reported Thursday that nine wildfires were burning in the state. According to Texas A&M AgriLife, 65% of wildfires occur during hunting season.
“We all need to be more aware and safer,” Stevens said.
She explained the various activities that can cause a fire. If you’re driving off-road, she recommends keeping your car or ATV well-maintained.
“Double-check that your tires have proper air and that your wheel bearings are working properly, because anything can cause a spark,” says Stevens.
Drivers are advised to avoid parking moving vehicles on dry grass.
“The catalytic converter and the exhaust from it are hot and can cause a fire,” Stevens said.
When attaching a trailer to a vehicle, it is recommended that the tow chain be of appropriate length to avoid sparks. Stevens also suggested adding a fire extinguisher and water to your safety kit.
“Anything we can do to prevent them is what we’re asking for,” she said.
In East Texas, the whitetail deer hunting season runs from November 2nd to January 5th. Duck season runs from November 9th to December 1st and from December 7th to January 26th. For more information on hunting season dates, visit: Texas Parks and Wildlife Sites.
