Elon Musk revealed the name of Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas supercomputing cluster after touring the recently constructed building over the weekend.
On Saturday, Musk wrote on X that the Giga Texas supercomputer cluster will be named “Cortex,” and that he had just finished touring the new facility. The building, which Musk confirmed as the supercomputer’s home in May after much speculation about the project, will be home to around 100,000 Nvidia H100 and H200 chips for video training of Optimus’ neural networks and for Full Self-Driving (FSD).
Musk has also previously detailed the Cortex supercomputing cluster’s massive cooling needs, explaining that the cluster will require around 130 MW of power and cooling this year, expanding to more than 500 MW over the next 18 months. The cooling needs have been demonstrated in recent months by the giant fans installed on the building, as seen in a recent photo by drone operator and Giga Texas observer Joe Tegtmeyer.

In addition to the fans, the Cortex supercomputing cluster also contains four giant water tanks for extra cooling, which Tesla constructed on the building’s second floor.
Musk estimated in June that Tesla would spend $3 billion to $4 billion on Nvidia this year out of a total of $10 billion in AI spending, about half of which he explained will be internal, spread across Tesla’s homegrown AI inference computer, sensors in all of its cars, and Dojo.
Musk also shared a video of the Cortex supercomputer facility after Independence Day last month, saying afterwards that he was working for the US holiday, unlike Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
