Elon Musk’s social media app will no longer be based in San Francisco.
BASTROP, Texas — A major social media company is moving halfway across the country to Texas.
X, formerly known as Twitter, is moving its headquarters from San Francisco to Bastrop, Texas.
The update comes following a recent court filing, according to the Austin Business Journal, but it’s unclear where X owner Elon Musk will build the new location.
The billionaire already has several business ventures in Bastrop, including The Bowling Bodega, a warehouse convenience store with a playground and lounge in the Hyperloop Plaza at 865 FM 1209.
X currently has employees in its offices in Austin’s Levander Loop, but Director of Real Estate and Workplace Affairs Nicole Hollander said in the filing that the company plans to relocate those employees to the new Bastrop building.
Hollander also said the company hopes to further expand its employee base.
“Following the official headquarters relocation, Company X plans to significantly expand its operations in Texas, including opening new offices and hiring additional Company X employees,” Hollander said, according to ABJ.
Why is Musk moving X to Texas?
On July 16, Musk announced plans to bring the X to Texas, and was looking for a roughly 100,000-square-foot space that could accommodate more than 600 people.
The decision comes after California passed Assembly Bill 1955 (the SAFETY Act) to protect LGBTQ+ students from being “docked” by school authorities.
Musk’s original tweet said “X HQ will be moving to Austin,” but that claim appears to have since been updated.
The business owner also has a number of other companies based in Texas, including Tesla in Austin and Space Exploration Technologies Inc. in Bastrop.
