Starbase, Texas, headquartered in Elon Musk’s SpaceX, is officially the city following resident votes. Most Starbase residents, primarily SpaceX employees, voted in favor of incorporating.
Locals in southern Texas have voted to create Starbase, the headquarters of Elon Musk’s SpaceX Company, official Texas City.
The transition to local municipality was approved in Saturday’s election. According to unofficial results released by Cameron County, the majority of eligible voters (212 out of 218) voted in favour of establishing a star base. The election also transferred powers from county officials to the city’s new mayor, Bobby Peden, and the city council.
The majority of residents who voted are used by SpaceX.
Musk took her to social media platform X and said, “It’s official now!”
In December, Starbase general manager Kathryn Lueders wrote an official request to Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr.
“To continue to expand the workforce needed to quickly develop and manufacture spacecraft, we need the ability to grow our Starbase as a community,” the petition in part states. “That’s why Cameron County is calling for elections to enable Starbase to be incorporated as the latest city in the Rio Grande Valley.”
SpaceX also requires federal authorities to allow Starbase launches to increase to 25 per five years a year.
Some locals protest star-based incorporation
Despite the election results, not everyone is happy with the establishment of Starbase. Some residents are worried that the mask company will restrict access to Boca Chica State Park and Boca Chica Beach, the Associated Press reported.
On Saturday, the South Texas Environmental Justice Network organized another protest against the city’s vote. Participants included Joset Hinojosa. His young child enjoys playing on the beach just like past generations of his family. The family has already experienced restrictions on access to the beach.
“One day was closed and there were days when I was turned away for days,” Hinojosa told the Associated Press.
Christopher Basardu, a member of the Texan Kariso/Comekurd state, who was responsible for organizing the protests, explained that his ancestors also lived in the area for generations.
“It’s not just important,” said Baraludu, “it’s sacred.”
