Lubbock, Texas, is not known exactly in winter wonderland. In many cases, cities are associated with dry, windy conditions and summer heat.
But sometimes, nature has a surprising way to even the most seasoned Western Texas residents.
Is this Texas?
Recent cold snaps have made one backyard waterfall a mesmerizing frozen display. The ice formation, which appears to be frozen at first glance, looks more like something from the northern climate than a typical Texas backyard.
Arctic Air
Temperatures in Lubbock can fall below freezing in winter months, but cold spells long enough to freeze running water are relatively rare. Meteorologists say the recent extreme cold conditions are the result of the Arctic air mass cleaning up the area, which is far below normal temperatures at this time of year.
Colds are no joke
This video is really cool, but points out the reality of Texas winter weather. The history of the state suffers primarily from infrastructure challenges during extreme cold weather. For now, however, the frozen waterfall remains a temporary work of art. It’s a fleeting reminder that even places known for the heat, there are still ways to create an entrance in winter.
