AUSTIN, Texas – Texas third-year quarterback Quinn Ewers and fourth-year center Jake Majors received weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference on Monday. After Texas beat No. 10/No. 9 Michigan 31-12 on Sept. 7, Ewers was named Offensive Player of the Week and Majors was named the league’s co-offensive lineman of the week.
The road win over Michigan snapped the Wolverines’ winning streak of 16 overall wins, a Big Ten record 29 regular season wins, 23 home wins (the longest streak since 28 wins from 1969-73), 23 home non-conference wins since 2014, and 15 regular season wins in non-conference games. Texas’ 19-point win was the Longhorns’ largest margin of victory against a top-10 team on the road since 1979. That year, UT beat No. 5/7 Missouri, 21-0, in Columbia. It was also the Longhorns’ largest point margin of victory against a top-10 team since 2005, when UT defeated No. 10/8 Texas Tech, 52-17, in Austin.
Ewers led the Longhorns to victory, completing 24 of 36 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns. It was Texas’ second straight top-10 road win, following last year’s win over No. 3 Alabama. Ewers has won eight straight true road games since 2022, throwing 15 touchdown passes with just one interception. Three of those wins have come at top-15 opponents’ stadiums, and in those games he has completed 63% of his passes for 792 yards and eight touchdowns (with zero interceptions). The Southlake, Texas native led the Longhorns to scoring opportunities on all five of his first-half attempts against Michigan, scoring three touchdowns and one field goal. His only missed point came on a missed field goal after a touchdown pass was called back due to a penalty.
In the first half, Ewers led the offense by completing 8 of 10 third-down conversions, including one touchdown on 6 of 7 passing and an 8-yard rush on a third-down, seven-yarder. Ewers has scored at least one passing touchdown in each of his past 15 starts, dating back to the 2022 season. Ewers is 2-0 under center this season, completing 44 of 63 passing attempts for 506 yards and six scores.
Majors is the second consecutive Longhorns offensive lineman to receive the SEC Co-Offensive Lineman of the Week award after Cameron Williams Jr. was honored by the conference office on September 2. Majors was the highest-rated Longhorns offensive lineman in the win over Michigan. The Prospect, Texas, native faced two of the best defensive tackles in college football, All-American Mason Graham and All-Big 12 Kenneth Grant, and did not allow a sack. Meanwhile, the Wolverines duo combined for four tackles and zero quarterback pressures. Majors contributed to Texas’ 143 rushing yards (4.5 yards per game), and offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Kyle Flood, whose Graham and Grant anchored Michigan’s defense last season, often calls Majors an extension of himself on the field, and with Majors at the helm of the offensive line, the offense totaled 389 yards and 31 points. Last season, Michigan’s defense led the nation in total defense (247.0 yards per game) and scoring defense (10.4 points per game).
The Longhorns will return to the friendly surroundings of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium to take on UTSA on Saturday, September 14th at 6pm CST, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN with Mark Jones (play-by-play), Roddy Jones (commentary) and Quint Kessenich (sideline) providing play-by-play coverage.
