Maxwell Football Club Executive Director Mark Wolpert will honor the College Hall of Fame coach for his contributions to football at the 88th Maxwell Awards to be held at the College on Friday, March 14, 2025. Mack Brown has been announced as the recipient of the club’s Francis “Reds” Bagnell Award. Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Frances Bagnell, the award’s namesake, was chairman of Maxwell Football Club and chairman of the National Football Foundation during his playing days.
A 47-year college coaching veteran, Brown spent 36 seasons as head coach at Texas (1998-2013), North Carolina (1988-97, 2019-24), Tulane (1985-87) and Appalachian State. I served as a coach. (1983). Brown compiled a 288-155-1 (.650) record in 36 seasons. Those 288 career wins rank seventh in FBS history. Brown, the 2005 Paul W. “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year and 2008 Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year, is one of the few coaches in college football history to lead two separate programs to a top-five national ranking. 1 person. He is the only coach to win 100 games at two FBS schools.
At the end of his tenure at Texas in 2013, Brown was one of only four active coaches to reach the 200-win mark. He was also one of only two coaches in the nation to lead a team to 21 bowls in 22 seasons, and the only coach to win 23 times in the past 24 years. His 225 wins from 1990 to 2013, the last eight years of his first term at UNC and his entire tenure at Texas, were the most by any coach in the country.
Brown was inducted into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame in December 2018 and is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Longhorn Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, and Rose Bowl Hall of Fame. and the Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame. He joins an elite coaching fraternity that includes Bagnell Award winners Bobby Bowden, Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier, Darrell Royal, Vince Dooley, Joe Paterno and William Manlove.
One of the most respected coaches in the game, Brown has served on numerous national committees, including president of the American Football Coaches Association. He also served on the AFCA Ethics Committee and the AFCA Public Affairs Committee. Brown is a member of the NCAA Football Rules Committee and the NCAA Football Issues Committee. He serves as chairman of the Football Coaches Committee and as a board member of the College Football Association. Brown has been invited to coach in five postseason All-Star games, including the Japan Bowl, Hula Bowl (twice), and East-West Shrine Game (twice). In March 2013, Brown was named the 2013 recipient of the Neyland Trophy, presented annually by the Knoxville Quarterback Club for contributions to college athletics.
