Texas volleyball fans woke up to the heartbreaking news that former player Pilar Victoria had died in Turkey at the age of 28. Victoria was found dead in her apartment on Thursday, August 29th.
A member of the Texas program from 2013-15, Victoria helped lead the Longhorns to two Final Four appearances in 2013 and 2014. After two seasons at Texas, the outside hitter transferred to Arkansas for his final two years of eligibility, playing professionally for the Nilufer Belediyespor club in Bursa.
According to Turkish news site Harberler.com, Victoria was found in her apartment by officials who went to check on her after she missed practice on Thursday. Victoria was known for being punctual and dedicated to the team, but she had not responded to teammates’ calls, sparking concern.
“We tried calling her multiple times but couldn’t reach her so we went to her apartment,” club manager Kenan Dastan said. “We found her unconscious in bed. It’s a heartbreaking loss for all of us.”
Victoria transferred to the Turkish club from France’s Beziers Volleyball team last season, and since graduating from college has played for the Puerto Rican national team as well as several professional clubs in Europe.
The cause of death is still unknown, pending forensic examination.
“The sudden and unexpected death of Pilar Marie Victoria has left us all deeply shaken,” a statement from Nilüfer Belediyespor said. “Her contribution to the team, both as a player and as a person, will never be forgotten. Our deepest condolences go to her family, friends and loved ones.”
The Texas Longhorns shared their condolences on social media Thursday following the official announcement.
