A bus carrying the Abilene Christian University football team was struck by a car late Saturday night after the team’s loss to Texas Tech, sending four passengers to the hospital. The driver of the car that struck the bus, a 19-year-old man, was arrested for DUI. According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the driver was not following the direction of traffic and crashed into the bus, which then collided with a car in another lane.
The accident happened around 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Marcia Sharp Freeway and University Avenue, just steps from Jones AT&T Stadium at the University of Texas Tech University in Lubbock. One ACU player, two coaches and the bus driver suffered minor injuries and were taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock, according to a statement from the Abilene Christian University athletic department.
The accident happened after the Wildcats lost 52-51 in overtime, narrowly missing a potential major upset. ACU, which competes at the FCS level in the United Athletic Conference, is 165 miles from Lubbock. The team was scheduled to complete the roughly 2 1/2-hour trip by bus.
“Red Raider Nation’s thoughts and prayers are with our friends at ACU and those who may have been injured in tonight’s accident,” Texas Tech athletics said in a statement. “Our administration has been in contact with ACU staff since their departure and will continue to provide assistance wherever needed.”
