On Saturday afternoon, the Texas Football team and head coach Steve Sarkisian completed their first scrimmage of preseason camp on Aug. 10. Texas has completed its first two fall scrimmages that will take place over the course of preseason camp over the next few weeks.
The Longhorns’ first fall scrimmage took place inside DKR and was closed to the media. Texas worked on situational goal-line and third-down plays while also doing some actual tackling drills in preparation for the scrimmage’s start on Aug. 10.
The defense seemed to perform at its best during the first fall scrimmages of preseason camp over the past few weeks. At the start of scrimmages, the first-team offensive line faced off against the second-team defensive line and vice versa.
To close out the scrimmage, Texas played one-on-one and two-on-two team battles in the second half. Texas also ran a red zone drill and a two-minute drill in which a three-team offense played against a three-team defense.
Here are four players who stood out from the Longhorns’ first scrimmage of preseason camp on Aug. 10.
As expected, junior Jadon Blue and sophomore Tre Wisner participated in first- and second-team practice at running back for the Longhorns’ backfield during today’s fall scrimmage. Freshmen Jerrick Gibson and Christian Clark also joined the Longhorns’ backfield rotation behind Wisner and Blue.
After the four scholarship running backs, the rusher who was rated the best performer in scrimmages this fall was third-year walk-on Collin Paige. Orange Bloods’ Anwar Richardson reported after scrimmage that Paige had the best day of any running back at Texas today.
Paige was reported to have made some impressive runs, racing through the tackles and even had a short touchdown run of a few yards to get into the end zone.
While it seemed like a tough day for the running backs overall, not finding much space to run against a stout Texas defense that featured first- and second-team defenders, Paige seemed to be a bright light in the backfield.
As an aside, second-year linebacker Derrion Garrett has reportedly seen snaps on both sides of the ball as a linebacker and backup running back for the Longhorns.
