In college football, you don’t often see teams playing each other again, much less three times in one season.
Heading into the 2024 season, we expected there would be a rematch or two during conference championship weekend. In the end, only one was earned between the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns in the SEC Championship Game.
Georgia traveled to Austin earlier this season and defeated the Longhorns 30-15 for a commanding victory over Texas. While Texas finished with the better overall record, there was no question which team was better that night, and heading into the SEC Championship Game, it’s hard to imagine whether the Bulldogs would have a similar advantage or if the Texas I was wondering if it was better. Game plan and become more competitive with a win against Texas A&M during Rivals Week.
This time, things got a little closer.
Texas and Georgia played a low-scoring game, ultimately tied at 16 points each after regulation. After Texas made a field goal, the Longhorns again relied on their defense to make the stop. they couldn’t get it done.
Georgia attacked the field and Trevor Etienne scored the game-winning 4-yard touchdown, giving the Bulldogs the SEC Championship and a 22-19 victory.
With the SEC Championship game now in the rearview mirror, we may actually not be done watching Texas and Georgia play on the gridiron just yet. Depending on what happens in the first few rounds of the postseason, both teams could face each other across the sideline again — for the third time in nearly as many months.
What a great time to live in the world of college football.
Both Georgia and Texas will wait for their official College Football Playoff standings to be determined. The College Football Playoff Selection Show will be held Sunday at noon ET on ESPN.
