AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) broke ground this afternoon on a new hospital to replace North Texas State Hospital in Wichita Falls. Governor Abbott and the 88th Texas Legislature approved $452 million in funding for an inpatient psychiatric hospital, scheduled for completion in late 2027.
“This new state hospital in Wichita Falls will increase access to mental health professionals and quality treatment for the people of North Texas,” Governor Abbott said. “Last year, I signed legislation that provides critical funding for Texas to expand and build new, modern mental health facilities across our great state. North Texas residents receive the care they need. Texas continues to work to improve behavioral health services for Texans in need. Thank you to the Health and Welfare Committee.”

The new hospital will have 200 beds: 24 maximum security beds, 136 non-maximum security beds, 24 youth beds and 16 civilian beds. Adult and adolescent patients will have separate living areas and the maximum security unit will include measures to ensure the safety of patients, staff and the community.

of North Texas State Hospital consists of one campus in Wichita Falls and two campuses in Vernon. of The hospital opened in 1922 after the 35th Texas Legislature called for a psychiatric facility to serve the community and surrounding areas. The campus provides inpatient psychiatric services for adults, adolescents, and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Since 2017, Governor Abbott and the Texas Legislature have provided more than $2.5 billion in funding to rebuild, renovate and expand the state’s hospitals. HHSC recently hosted the grand opening of the next state hospital. austin and san antonio.
Construction is currently underway on a new Texas Behavioral Health Center at UT Southwestern in Dallas and a replacement hospital in Terrell. Construction of new hospitals in Amarillo and Lubbock is scheduled to begin in 2025.
