AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott recognized Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw for his dedication to the state of Texas throughout his 40-plus year career as a law enforcement officer and 15 years leading the agency during the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Recruit A-2024 graduation ceremony in Austin. During his keynote address, the Governor praised the new graduates for joining the most elite law enforcement agency in the nation.
“Now, more than ever, you play a vital role and you are led by a highly respected individual who has contributed greatly to the success of DPS,” said Governor Abbott. “It has been an honor to work with Director Steve McCraw. He is a leader, a visionary and the quintessential Texas law enforcement officer in his big white cowboy hat.
DPS members are often the first on the scene of major emergencies, saving lives. As you swear in as a DPS member today, you are answering a higher calling to protect and serve our state and all those who call it home. I want to thank Secretary Steve McCraw for your unwavering service to Texas and thank the recruits of the A-2024 class for their service, dedication and courage to Texans. Congratulations on this incredible achievement.”
In his address, Governor Abbott congratulated the 101 graduates for completing the rigorous 30-week training program and thanked them for answering the call to serve and protect their fellow Texans. DPS Class A-2024 graduates include 36 military veterans, 16 women and 45 who speak multiple languages. Class A-2024 graduates will report to their duty stations on September 15, 2024.
In addition to the Governor, the graduation ceremony was attended by Texas Public Safety Commission Chairman Steven P. Mack, Commissioner Nelda Blair, Commissioner Dan Hoard, Commissioner Larry Long and Commissioner Steve Stodghill, DPS Director McCraw, DPS Deputy Director Freeman Martin, and other state law enforcement officials.
