Ted Cruz and Colin Allred will face off only in the Senate debate
Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Colin Allred face off before voting in Texas’ biggest election of the year.
Dallas – Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Colin Allred face off before voting in Texas’ biggest election of the year.
Republican senators and Democratic House members debated a variety of topics affecting Texans Tuesday in their first and only debate.
Mr. Allred is aiming to oust Mr. Cruz, who is seeking a third term in the Senate.
Mr. Cruz sought to connect Mr. Allred with the Biden administration, while Mr. Allred sought to portray Mr. Cruz as someone who only cared about himself.
There were some lively moments during the debate, but polls show a close race.
This was the first and only opportunity for Allred and Cruz to debate before Texans begin early voting next Monday.
About abortion
Abortion was the fourth most important issue for voters in the latest poll.
Allred continued to ask Cruz whether he would make exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.
Mr. Cruz reversed his stance, arguing that, in Mr. Allred’s words, a late-term abortion would be preferable, at eight or nine months into the pregnancy.
Mr. Cruz: “He voted to repeal the Texas law that gives parents the right to informed consent. He voted to repeal the Texas law that gives parents the right to informed consent. “That’s extreme,” and that’s not the place for the people of Texas. ”
Allred: “Senator Cruz is on camera and lying to Texans about my position. Let me be clear: You look on camera and talk to Kate Cox, who is watching right now, and say, ‘Why this legislation?’ What you said is a perfectly reasonable reason why she had to leave her two children and flee the state to get the care she needed. ”
Moderator: “Senator, you didn’t answer the question directly. I’d like to ask again, do you support a rape and incest exception?”
Mr. Cruz: “Let me be clear: If you listen to Rep. Allred’s response, he never mentioned his record at any point.”
on the border
The border is an important issue for voters across the country in this election, but it’s getting even more attention here in Texas.
Allred went on to criticize Cruz for defeating a bipartisan border bill that would have brought more resources to border officials and judges.

2024 Election: Races to Watch in North Texas
The political landscape in Texas over the next two years may come down to several key state elections in Dallas, San Antonio and South Texas. Here are the races to watch in North Texas:
Cruz said Allred is just starting to focus on the border now that he’s running for Senate.
Mr. Cruz also used a line that Mr. Allred has made on the campaign trail about calling the border wall racist years ago.
Allred: “$20 billion for 1,000 new Border Patrol agents, 100 new immigration agents, 4,000 asylum workers to get technology to catch fentanyl crossing the border. Didn’t you support it?”
CRUZ: I’ll tell you something he said just a few years ago. He said, “We don’t hear much about the border here in Dallas.” It’s not a top priority issue. ”And I had to say, I represented Dallas statewide for 12 years. I hear about it everywhere I go. That’s what I heard in Dallas. ”

About the economy
Colin Allred, Ted Cruz talks economics, January 6th
Mr. Cruz sought to connect Mr. Allred with the Biden administration, while Mr. Allred sought to portray Mr. Cruz as someone who only cared about himself.
A University of Houston poll released Tuesday morning found the economy was the top priority for Texas voters.
Mr. Allred spoke about growing up with a single mother and was pressed to defend the rise in inflation during the Democratic presidency.
Allred said Cruz is not working to lower health care costs for Texans.
Cruz: “If you’re a senior on a fixed income, you’re finding it increasingly difficult to pay your bills. If you’re a working couple who just bought their first home, a 7% mortgage is You’ll notice a big difference.” For anyone trying to fill up on gas or a single mother worried about getting her daughter to get braces, the inflation caused by Kamala Harris and Colin Allred’s spending spree is hurting all Texans. ”
Allred: “I thought it was a good idea to cap insulin costs for Medicare enrollees at $35 a month. I voted for it. Sen. Cruz apparently opposed it. Four Americans Every person is rationing insulin, so we tried to put a cap on everyone.”Rating insulin means you’re not taking the medicine you need to survive. . So we said, “Let’s make sure this is affordable.” I happily voted yes. Senator Cruz voted against it. ”
About the January 6th Capitol riot
Democracy and January 6th were other topics Tuesday night. A UH poll ranks this as the third most important issue for Texas voters.
Cruz: “I think anyone who commits an act of violence should be prosecuted and sent to prison. If you assault a police officer, you should be in prison for a very long time. By the way, that’s what I said. Whether I agree with your politics or disagree with you, I have spent 12 years fighting to protect the men and women of law enforcement. ”
Allred: “You can’t be on the side of the rioters on January 6th and be on the side of the cops. You can’t do that, and that’s not fun, because you’re a threat to democracy. We’re going to vote.” I was on the House floor when we were doing “I remember when you objected to the results in Arizona.” Where you were on January 6th, I remember where he was. They didn’t know we were there to get gas masks because tear gas was being used in the amphitheater. ”
Mr. Cruz has promoted gender politics in several ads.
Cruz claimed Allred was for men in a women’s sport, but Allred said that’s not true. Allred called this a “Hail Mary” distraction.
Early voting begins Monday.
