Former Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Frank Occam is familiar with the lonely star state and is now his first return as an NFL coach.
According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, the Houston Texans hired Occam as their new assistant defensive line coach. The 39-year-old Okam has spent the past two years as Toledo’s defensive line coach.
He will now work with his former Longhorns teammate, Texans defensive line coach Rod Wright.
The Texans’ pass rush was the biggest strength of the season, with two former Longhorns now coaching Will Anderson Jr. and Daniel Hunter co-coach.
Okam played for Texas in 2004-07, where he recorded 7.5 sacks at that point, five of which came in his final season. He was a freshman national in 2004 and a third-team national in 2007. Of course, he was also a member of the Longhorns’ 2005 National Championship team.
The Texans selected Okam in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft and played alongside current head coach Demeco Ryans. He also played for the Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants over a four-year career. He recorded a total of 33 tackles and fumble recovery in 25 NFL games.
As a coach, Okam started out as a graduate assistant for Rice in 2014 and became a defensive line coach two years later. He also coached at Baylor from 2018-19, then made a leap into the NFL with the Carolina Panthers (2020-21) and the Las Vegas Raiders (2022). Some of the most well-known players he coached include Carolina’s Brian Burns and Derrick Brown and Las Vegas’ Max Crosby.
