Austin, Texas — One side of the Texas Capitol was surrounded by a sea of people Monday afternoon as protests against President Donald Trump and his administration took place nationwide.
Hundreds held signs with messages such as “I’m not my president” and “I’m not king on President’s Day.” Many also condemned Elon Musk’s involvement with the Trump administration following recent actions from the so-called Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The rally was part of an effort led by the 50,501 movements across the country this President’s Day. According to its website, the organization’s goal is to end executive overreach with 50 protests in 50 states and one move.
The protest took the Texans from across the state to Austin to hear their voices.
Sarah Ramirez is the organizer of the San Antonio-based 50501, who helped to promote Monday’s demonstration. She says she was involved in the 50501 move for inclusiveness.
“They’re for human rights. Whether it’s women’s rights, trans rights, LBGTQIA, veterans,” says Ramirez. “And now, the rights of American citizens are under attack and taken away.”
After gathering outside the Capitol stairs, the group was exposed around 3pm and marched down the streets of Congress, leaving dozens outside the Capitol gate in the evening.
The President’s Day protest comes after people gathered to protest Trump’s policies earlier this month and after Elon Musk’s involvement in the administration last weekend.
Spectrum News 1 contacted the Texas Republicans for their response to the demonstration, but there was no response.
