Austin, Texas – Kathy Hurston – Senior Associate Athletics Director and Sports Administrator for six programs on 40 acres – was selected for the 97th Clyte Littlefield Texas Relay presented by the Truist Honorary Judge. Hurston will be recognized at the grand ceremony at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Saturday at 1pm.
“I’m not aware of her legacy and the work she does for countless programs on campus,” coach Edrick Floréal said. “It is inspiring that her unwavering support for our team and countless efforts to ensure excellence are achieved.”
Harson is a sports administrator for track and field/cross country, beach volleyball, rowing, soccer, volleyball and women’s basketball and oversees day-to-day operations. Since returning to 40 acres in 2021, Hurston has played a pivotal role in all the sports she oversees.
“It’s a huge honor to be recognized at a tournament like the Texas Relay,” Hurston said. “The tradition and success written throughout this conference brings great joy to be part of it this year.”
Hurston served in the role of four years in Knoxville, Tennessee, as operations director for Ladyvols, Tennessee, before returning to UT. Before Knoxville, Hurston worked as an assistant Texas women’s basketball coach for 18 years from 1989 to 2007. He then served as an academic counselor in Texas for a year from 2007 to 2008.
He made 14 NCAA tournament appearances, including a 2003 trip to the Final Four, Hall of Fame, Texas coach and assistant coach for Jodie Conratt.
Hurston was Head Girls Basketball coach and athletic coordinator for five years at Plainview High School (1984-89) in Plainview, Texas. She led Plainview to the Texas Class 5A state championship from 1986-87 and was named Texas State High School Coach of the Year. Hurston also spent two years as an assistant coach at Texas Institute of Technology (1982-84).
During his college playing, Hurston was the four-year letter winner for Ire National Powerhouse Wayland Baptist. She was a national Kodak and a finalist in the 1980 Wade Trophy (National Player of the Year). Hurston led the Flying Queens to the 1977 National Women’s Invitational Tournament Championship and finished fourth in the 1978 IA National Championship. In January 2006, she was named one of the “Top 25 Players of the Pre-NCAA Basketball Era” by ESPN.com.
Hurston received his Bachelor of Athletics degree from the Wayland Baptist in 1980. He then received his Masters in Education in 1982 from North Texas. Hurston was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996 and in 2008 inducted into the Wayland Baptist Athletics Hall of Fame.
