Texas: Houston and the Texas Medical Center are home to many doctors who received their medical training in India. The center maintains close ties with the Indian medical community through educational and clinical collaborations, particularly with junior doctors.
Violence against doctors has been rampant in Indian hospitals for years, and the absence of definitive and effective legislation to curb and punish such crimes has left doctors feeling extremely anxious and disheartened.
And when such reprehensible violation escalated into the unimaginable brutal rape and murder of a young doctor on duty at a prominent government hospital in Kolkata, the pain and anguish they experienced shattered their long-held composure.
On Friday, August 23, doctors decided to stand up as a community and fight for justice and protection for healthcare workers and all members of the community. Physicians, healthcare workers and community members from various hospital systems gathered at the Texas Medical Center to speak out against this heinous crime.
The invitation read: “Please join us for a peaceful rally to celebrate the life of a dedicated pulmonary resident who tragically lost his life while on duty. This rally is a solemn call for justice and a protest against the dangerous conditions facing healthcare workers.”
Together we light a candle, share words of solidarity, and demand accountability so that all health care workers are protected. Let us come together as a community to support a safer environment for those in our care.”
