LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – As Red Raider fans prepare for a big game against Colorado, several business owners are partnering to provide an unforgettable experience for single parents and their children.
“My best childhood memories are going to games,” Big Wicks owner Wes Wicker said.
Those memories are forever cemented in Wes’ mind.
Growing up in Lubbock with a single mother, Wes was determined to attend as many football games as possible.
“I went to work in Raider Alley and I worked at a place that sold chopped beef sandwiches, and usually someone would cut me through the line and give me an extra ticket,” Wes said.
Now he and his wife, Sarah, want to pass on those memories.
This year, the Wickers will hold a raffle before each home game, giving away a free ticket to one parent and child.
“I want kids to have a great experience that they wouldn’t normally get to experience. It’s really fun because the parents can be the heroes and surprise them by saying, ‘Hey, I’m going to the game tomorrow.’ is always exciting,” Sarah said.
Wes remembers the days when football tickets were only $15.
The face value of the tickets they are giving out for the Colorado game is $110 each.
“If you’re on a budget, $220 for yourself and your kids is a big chunk of your budget,” Sarah says.
Other executives are also joining Wickers to get better deals.
Mukewater Outfitters is giving away free shirts and Shawn Stephens of Chopped & Sliced BBQ is trying to make sure no one goes hungry.
“I just wanted to come in and help them and be at the top of the experience. It always tugs at my heartstrings when I can do something like this for someone in need.” said Stevens.
Stevens is a single parent. He says he knows firsthand how special those memories are.
“It just creates a bond. It’s not easy to go to a Tech game by yourself. This one will be sold out tomorrow. This is a great way to have someone enjoy the whole day with lunch and games,” Stevens said. said.
The Wickers and Stevens said they look forward to continuing this next year.
