Grace Foster and Kennedy Chapel each scored 15 points, with the LCU knocking off the top-ranked Texan women 62-54 on Monday night at Denton, earning the South Central Regional for the first time in a decade.
Maci Maddox and Audrey Robertson added 10 points each to the LCU (32-4). The Lady Chaps, who played on the pioneer home court at Kitty Magee Arena, surged from a 35-24 deficit late in the third quarter to a 62-52 lead in the final minute of the game.
The LCU will proceed to the Elite 8 site where the final three rounds of the D-II tournament take place. This year, it will be located in Pittsburgh at UPMC Cooperfield House, a 10,000-seat arena home to the Duquesne basketball team.
Ashley Ingram scored 20 points for the Texas Women. This season was his only loss on November 23rd at UT Tyler. Scout Huffman added a nine for Pioneer.
Averee Kleinhans’ theft and layup extended the Texas women’s lead to 35-24 with 3:05 left in the third quarter. The LCU countered with a 38-17 run, with Chapel earning 12 points, Foster 11 and Tier Johnson Seven.
Lady Chaps eliminated an 11-point deficit with five three-point goals in the final three minutes of the third quarter, and it was the first minute in a quarter when Johnson moved the end of five three-pointers 39-38.
Elite Eight will be available from March 24th to 28th. The pairings are not yet known as the eight regional champions will be reorganised.
The five No. 1 seeds are Union (Tennessee), Pittsburgh, Bentley, Grand Valley and Dominguez Hills, California. The other three are the second species: LCU, coker and Ganon.
Lady Chaps won the D-II National Championships in 2016, 2019 and 2021.
