Houston – An inmate who escaped from the Huntsville, Texas, prison was arrested in Calallen, Texas, after a statewide manhunt on Sunday. The inmate had escaped from the maximum security prison earlier in the day, prompting authorities to issue a warning and launch an extensive manhunt.
Jesus Villarreal, 39, was discovered missing from the jail earlier that morning, and authorities believe he fled in a maroon Chevrolet Malibu that he had stolen from a nearby convenience store.
Villarreal was serving a 63-year sentence for multiple violent crimes out of Cameron County, including four counts of robbery and two counts of assault, and was also charged in 2015 with possessing a deadly weapon behind bars.
Villarreal faces an additional charge of escape on top of his already lengthy prison sentence.
Authorities credited police’s quick response and hard work with recapturing Villarreal. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
