Coach McConaughey called the fans’ actions “BS” and said fans should clean up before their next home game against the Florida Gators.
AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas’ Minister of Culture spoke.
Longtime Longhorn fan Matthew McConaughey, in a statement posted to objected to throwing trash onto the field.
McConaughey, a 1993 graduate of the University of Texas and a regular at Longhorn games, addressed his statement to all Texas fans, but specifically mentioned DKR’s student section.
McConaughey started praising the fans for their passion and giving him a huge home-field advantage, but then he started talking about the trash-throwing incident in earnest.
“But let’s get serious about bottle bombing the field glitches we experienced,” McConaughey wrote. “Not cool. Bogey move. Yeah, that call was BS, but we’re better than that.”
McConaughey, who was appointed UT’s culture minister in 2018, emphasized the importance of maintaining dignity and showing fandom.
“So from now on, let’s brush it aside and leave it behind for good,” McConaughey wrote. “Next time, Nov. 9, when the Gators come to town, make sure they feel the heat, make sure you don’t hear the play calls, and let them burn the timeouts. But remember, the Texans Nothing hits our field except the fight.”
Beyond McConaughey’s disapproval, fans who throw trash could face real consequences. The SEC fined UT $250,000 on Sunday.
It also ordered the university to use “all available resources” to find the fan who threw the object on the field and ban him from participating in Longhorn sporting events this academic year.
The University of Texas also released a statement saying, “We do not condone the unsportsmanlike conduct exhibited by some individuals who threw objects onto the field during last night’s game, and we sincerely apologize to the players, coaches, and fans of the University of Georgia. ” he said. The same goes for the Southeastern Conference and administrative staff. ”
