After a thorough and competitive search process, McAllen Mayor Havel Villalobos and the McAllen City Commission are pleased to announce that they have selected Isaac Tawil to be the next Mayor of the City of McAllen. Tawil brings extensive experience in government, leadership and community engagement, as well as legal expertise.

Tawil has over 13 years of experience in municipal government, most recently serving as City Attorney for the City of McAllen since 2021. Prior to that, he served as Assistant City Attorney for nine years where he led the department’s litigation activities. In both roles, he led numerous contracts that solidified economic development initiatives, facilitated public safety agreements, improved infrastructure projects and financing, guided emergency management outreach, promoted international agreements, and represented the City of McAllen in civil litigation while protecting taxpayers. His track record of fostering collaboration and driving innovation aligns perfectly with the City of McAllen’s commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents.

“I am pleased to appoint Isaac as the new leader of the City of McAllen,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villabos. “His proven leadership and vision will help guide our city to meet new opportunities in the future, and I look forward to working together to achieve our shared goals.”

This is a vibrant community with a rich history and a bright future. I look forward to working collaboratively with the City Commission and staff to build on our track record for the benefit of our residents and visitors.”

Prior to working for the City of McAllen, Tawil worked in private practice.

Tawil earned his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and his Juris Doctor from Saint Mary’s University School of Law. Tawil is a member and past president of Temple Emanuel. He is married and has two sons and one daughter.

Tawil will officially succeed Mayor Roel “Roy” Rodriguez on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. Mr. Rodriguez has dedicatedly served the City in various capacities for over 20 years. The McAllen City Commission and staff extend their sincere gratitude to Mayor Rodriguez for his service and leadership.
