FORT WORTH, Texas – McFadin Ranch was awarded the Texas Environmental Stewardship Award at the 2025 Cow Razor Convention & Expo in Fort Worth April 11-13. The award was recognized for exceptional management and innovation of South Texas cattle ranches.
McFaddin Ranch is a living testimony to the resilience and innovation of Texas Ranch. Founded in 1877, James Alfred McFadin purchased 32,500 acres between the Guadalupe and San Antonio rivers, establishing the heritage of the ranch, which has lasted nearly 150 years.
“McFadin Ranch is a powerful example of how Texas ranch heritage can continue to evolve while still remaining true to its roots,” said Dan Gattis, second vice president of the Texas and Southwestern Cow Razors Association, awarding the award. “Responsible land management and dedication to long-term sustainability is something we can recognize.”
To achieve sustainable cattle production in a challenging Gulf environment, McFaddin Ranch has developed Victoria Braford, a three-quarter Brahman cross from Hereford, to increase heat resistance and toughness. Towards the same goal, under Bob McCann’s leadership, they are also implementing a rotating grazing system to maintain and restore native coastal grasslands.
“Their ranch practices are committed to integrating research-evided strategies to clarify sustainability,” Gattis said. “By taking into account the economics, the environment and social environment, their free practices will allow this family legacy to last strongly to the sixth generation.”
This 2025 Texas Environmental Stewardship Award is presented as a joint effort between the Texas and the Southwest Cattle Razor Association and the Texas Pastry Lands Union. As a 2025 winner, McFaddin Ranch will compete among other outstanding ranchers for the 2025 Environmental Stewardship Awards program.
