A North Texas medical assistant has been accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with a patient at Little Spurs Pediatrics in Irving.
Angel Nunez, 25, worked as a medical assistant for the company from August 2023 to August 2024, according to Irving Police.
Nunez is charged with one count of indecency with a child.
According to a police affidavit, the 14-year-old boy came to Little Spurs in Irving for a sports physical on Aug. 14.
On August 30, the boy reported the incident and said Nunez took him to a second exam room, separate from his mother, and told him he needed an eye exam.
After they were alone in a second exam room, Nunez told the boy that he was going to perform a genital exam and that the doctor would do it again once the boy was returned to his mother, the report said. That’s what it means.
At the time, the boy did not know there was anything wrong with the first exam, the report said.
Police said Nunez was performing the test and tried to hide the fact that he was not authorized to do so. It also said there was no medical reason to conduct the test twice during the victim’s visit.
“From what we understand at this point, part of his job was to take vitals and things like that, but he wasn’t a doctor himself,” said Detective Padrutt of the Irving Police Department.
In a statement to NBC 5, Little Spurs said they reported the incident to Child Protective Services as soon as they learned of it.
“Little Spurs has been caring for children in the communities we serve for over 15 years and is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment for all of our patients and their families. We recently learned that an employee was performing a medical procedure that exceeded his or her scope of practice.” As soon as we became aware of this incident, we immediately reported it to Child Protective Services and conducted an internal investigation. An investigation has been launched and law enforcement continues to investigate the former. At Little Spurs, we adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and ethical behavior and are committed to ensuring that all staff behave in accordance with our core values and policies. ” – Little Spurs Pediatrics
Police said the CPS forwarded the incident to police and Little Spurs cooperated fully with the investigation.
Police say there are now three victims in Irving, including a 9-year-old and a 15-year-old.
“There are three victims at the moment, two of them from sports physicals. And in the course of that sports physical, patients are separated from their parents, thinking this is all part of the exam, and then “The defendant engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with the patient,” Padrut said.
Padrutto said he believes there are more victims and that Nunez also worked at Little Spurs locations in Grand Prairie, Arlington and Fort Worth last year. Padrutto said Nunez also worked at other medical facilities before Little Spurs.
“Most victims don’t realize that something unusual happened during the exam. So it’s important for parents to have the tough conversations with them and go back and talk to them and say, ‘Hey, you’re at this clinic. I wish I could say, “I was there.” Do you know what happened? What did the doctor do? ” said Padrut.
He said Irving police alerted other police departments.
“We have notified departments in these other locations to let them know that this investigation is ongoing and that they may be contacted about crimes that occur in their cities,” he said. said.
