Austin, Texas – Junior guard Jordan Pope scored a game-high 21 points, but Texas (17-14, 6-12 seconds) dropped a 76-72 fierce fight decision against Oklahoma (19-12, 6-12 seconds) at the Moody Center on Saturday night. The Longhorns won eight and nine straights out of their final ten meetings against Sooners who will be taking part in the contest.
The defeat ruined UT’s senior night as the program praised a group of seven senior players, Cole Bott, Arthur Karma, Jason Kent, Julian Larry, Tromon Mark, Zelick Oniema and Kadin Shedrick, in a short pre-match ceremony.
The Pope paced four longhorns with four digit scoring, converting a 7-for-6 field goal, including six-sixth field goals from the 3-point range and three free throws along with four rebounds in the 26th minute. Alumnus Tramon Mark posted 12 points (4-10 FG, 3-4 feet), a season-high eight rebounds and two steels in 32 minutes. Senior Arthur Karma scored 12 points (5-8 FG) and four rebounds in 20 minutes, while alumni Julian Larry added 10 points (3-5 FG, 2-3, 2-2 feet) in 19 minutes. Freshman Tre Johnson tallied a career-high six assists and seven rebounds while scoring seven points (7-7 feet) in 34 minutes.
In half of the openings before and after, there were nine lead changes and six ties. The Sooners gained an early advantage of 7-3, following a pair of Jaron Moore free throws at the 17:56 mark. Texas responded with a 6-0 run in the next 80 seconds, grabbing a 9-7 lead after a three-point play from the Pope at 16:34. After Glen Taylor Jr. 3-pointer trimmed the deficit 16-15 at the 11:11 mark, the Longhorns scored five straight points to build a 21-15 cushion following a pair of rally free throws with 10:34 left.
The Larry’s layup gave the Longhorns a 23-18 advantage at the 9:20 mark, but the Sooners responded with a 6-0 spurt over the next two minutes, taking a 24-23 lead following Taylor Jr. Dunk with 7:27 left. Neither team led more than three points for the rest of the first half, and the team went for a 37-37 break tied together.
Mark 3 pointer evenly equalized the contest at 47-47 with the 14:29 mark, but Oklahoma scored five straight points to build a 52-47 cushion after the remaining Jeremiah horror dunked at 13:01. The Duke Miles Free Throw pair gave the Sooners a 65-62 advantage at the 5:14 mark. Texas used a pair of Pope free throws and a layup by the Pope to take a 66-65 lead with 3:47 left.
Oklahoma built a 73-67 cushion after a 2:11 mark Bryce Good-in 3-pointer followed by an 8-1 run over the next 90 seconds. The Longhorns trimmed the margin to 75-72 following the Pope’s three-pointer with 6 seconds left, but Goodin sealed the victory by hitting a 1-of-2 free throw with 1.9 seconds.
Texas is active when they move to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the 2025 SEC tournament. The Longhorns have the No. 13 seed, and will face No. 12 Seed Vanderbilt in the first round on Wednesday, March 12th. The tips will be set at approximately 2:30pm in the Bride Quality Area Central, and the contest will be aired nationwide by the SEC network.
