WACO, Texas – Texas men’s tennis junior Sebastian Gosney and freshman Timo Legout advanced to the singles round of 32 at the 2024-25 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships in Waco on Tuesday.
Top-seeded Gosney defeated No. 7 Gavin Young of Michigan 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, while Legout defeated Timofey Stepanov of California 6-3, 6. I broke it with a -4 straight. Junior Jonah Braswell also competed in the first round, but fell short to Raphael Papaczyk (Denver), 5-7, 7-6 (3), 7-5.
Gosney held serve throughout the first set of the match, with Young getting the only break and winning 7-5. During that stretch, Gosney had a chance to break the deuce point with the score tied at 3-3, but Young held on for a 4-3 lead. In the second set, Gorzny got the first break of the match in the opening game, and despite having two deuce points along the way, the break held with him on serve for the rest of the set. Gosney then opened up a 3-0 lead in the third set on the strength of two deuce point breaks. Young responded with a break to make it 3-1, but remained on serve for the rest of the set, even though the last three games all went to deuce. Gosney now has the win and will next face No. 11 Paul Inshauspe (Princeton) on Wednesday at 9 a.m. CT.
Legout made his NCAA Tournament debut and got his first break in the match against Stepanov. He led 3-1 at the deuce point, but Stepanov broke to make it 3-2. On the next break, Legout got another deuce point and extended his lead to 5-3 before serving out. The second held serve until 4-4, despite having four deuce points in between. But from there, Legault took the final eight points of the match, winning with a break and a hold. The next leg out game will be No. 4 Cooper Williams of Duke University at 11:30 a.m. CT.
Texas came close to having three players advance to the last 32 as Braswell held six match points in the second set, but Papazyk was able to fend them off and ultimately took the set to a tiebreaker. He took it and won the third set. Papazyk swept Braswell’s first two service games in the first set and opened up a 3-0 lead. But Braswell rallied with a 4-0 run that included two deuce point breaks. Papazyk then scored back-to-back deuce points to regain a 5-4 lead, but Braswell clawed back from there and won the final three games with deuce point breaks. The set remained on serve until the tiebreak, when Braswell took the lead on the second point with a deuce point hold, but there were four more deuce points along the way. In two of those matches, Braswell led 5-4 and 6-5, holding a 15-40 edge on Papazyk’s serve, but Papazyk escaped with a hold and continued in the match. In the tiebreak, Papaik grabbed a mini-break and held the first serve to make it 2-0. Braswell took the next point and was within one point again at 3-2, but Papazyk went on a 3-0 run to make it 6-2 and then won 7-3 to take the third set in a row. There, Papazyk secured the first break and led 4-2 despite two deuce points in the process. He was solid at 5-2, but had to serve to get within 5-4 before ending the set at 5-4, and Braswell recovered the break. The next two matches were both deuce, but Papazyk was able to win both.
In doubles, Legout and sophomore Lucas Brown will play BYU’s Wally Sain and Zach Fuchs on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT.
