The Texas A&M Aggies are scheduled to play the Auburn Tigers this Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium, but all we can talk about right now is their matchup with the Texas Longhorns on November 30th.
Anticipation only grew on Monday when it was announced that the rekindled Lone Star Showdown would kick off at 6:30 a.m. on ABC prime time.
And with so much fanfare and anticipation surrounding this game, it’s natural to wonder if both the Aggies and Longhorns are looking forward to the matchup.
Aggies head coach Mike Elko was asked about it during his weekly press conference, and his response went viral online.
“I don’t think (our focus) is the problem,” Elko said. “In the kind of situation we’re in, it’s easy to focus on the job at hand. We’ve got big games coming up early this year, so I think we’re probably looking ahead. If we If it’s not at stake, then what’s at stake, you’d probably worry about it. I think we’re just focused on Texas right now… Nope. I mean Auburn, we are committed to what we need to do.”
Of course, Elko’s mistake was an innocent one. His team is focused on Auburn, and Auburn is only committed to the weekend.
Does that mean his team hasn’t done anything in recent months to prepare for the game against the Longhorns? Absolutely not.
The same could be said for Steve Sarkisian.
Both teams have spent several bye weeks and the entire offseason working out each other’s game plans.
But this week? The Aggies will be focused on playing against the Tigers, while the Longhorns will be focused on playing against Kentucky.
That being said, things will change at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
