A Minnesota man who fled and fled the GPS tracker before a criminal sexual conduct trial in Washington County District Court died in Texas Wednesday night, officials said.
David Powers, 37, of New Auburn, Minnesota, reportedly jumped off an elevated overpass on a San Antonio highway and attacked someone who stopped for help. He later died at a hospital in San Antonio, police said.
According to a preliminary report from the San Antonio Police Department, officers responded to a report of “ongoing suicide” at 410 Northeast Loop Wednesday at 10:19pm.
Witnesses told police that they saw them jump off a bridge near Jones Marzberger Road and land in the westbound lane of Loop 410, according to the report. He was then seen walking down the highway and trying to stop the vehicle, police said.
“The citizens stopped the vehicle as a male suspect pulled the citizen away from the vehicle, began assaulting the citizen and tried to steal the citizen’s vehicle,” the report said.
Officers arrived and detained power. He was later taken to the hospital by EMS, where he was declared injured and died, the report said.
Washington County officials were confirmed by Texas officials Friday morning that the man who died was in power, Deputy Director Doug Anschutz said.
Washington County District Court Judge Helen Brosnahan issued an arrest warrant for authority as the power did not appear to be cross-examined by Washington County prosecutors near the end of Monday’s five-day criminal trial.
On Tuesday afternoon, a Washington County ju judge was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, inducement and domestic assault with strangulation.
Powers, who left the Washington County Jail May 9 after posting a $500,000 bail, cut off his GPS ankle monitor.
Powers, also known as David Robekevich, was charged in 2023 with be-striking and raping a woman from Lake Elmo, holding her against her will at home for more than 24 hours.
