Two teams that had improved their offensive performance in the playoffs faced off for the state title.
And the title game was full of points, with Munster scoring a big win in the Texas Interscholastic League 2A Division II championship game on Wednesday night.
Hornet quarterback Kasen Carney makes a 6-yard keeper with 40 seconds left for his fourth rushing TD of the night, giving Munster a 36-29 victory over Shiner at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. did.
Carney, who was named Offensive MVP, had nearly 320 yards of total offense and four rushing TDs. The Hornets (14-2) won their second title in program history after 2017.
Entering Wednesday’s title game, Munster and Shiner (12-4) had each combined for nearly 100 points in the postseason. Both teams went at a blistering pace in the first half, each scoring three touchdowns.
But perhaps the most important play of the night was the punt. With over five minutes left and Munster leading by one point, Caden Clement made a punt. Clement’s punt went down at Shiner 1, forcing the Hornets defense to go three-and-out.
They gained great field position with a short punt and Maverick Beyer’s 15-yard return to the Shiner 20. Five plays later, Carney found the end zone for the fourth time, and Munster added a two-point conversion, ironically when Carney passed to Clement.
